Paexo Shoulder – for overhead work

The Paexo Shoulder is an exoskeleton that supports people who carry out physically demanding tasks with their arms raised on a daily basis. It relieves strain on the shoulder joints and upper arms, for example during overhead work on assembly lines in logistics or during neurosurgical operations.

Paexo Shoulder is an exoskeleton that does not require an energy supply. This makes it especially lightweight – in fact, it is the lightest exoskeleton of its kind, weighing in at less than two kilograms. The product design is based on natural human movements. Users can walk, sit and also pick up objects with the exoskeleton. It can be worn comfortably for more than eight hours while providing noticeable relief for the shoulders and arms during overhead work.

Quick to put on and take off

After a familiarization phase, it takes under 20 seconds to put on and take off the Paexo Shoulder. Thanks to quick and easy handling, the exoskeleton can be taken off between uses, for example when on breaks or when rotating workstations.

“Ottobock’s close support during the pilot phase helped us to identify the right workstations and make them more ergonomical with exoskeletons. Ottobock was a reliable partner during the introduction. Today our employees use exoskeletons on a daily basis in the goods inward department and the warehouse.”

Over the past three years the advances in exoskeleton development have been very noticable, and I’m particularly pleased to see the developers incorporating user feedback to make the devices lighter and simpler. I firmly expect these advances to continue in the future.

Joint The joint follows the movement of the shoulder according to biomechanical principles. This is also where the user adjusts the level of support to the arm weight. Energy store With its intelligent, purely mechanical cable pull technology, Paexo Shoulder makes it easier to raise the arms and hold them up. In this process, the energy store always releases only as much energy as the user actually needs. Pelvic belt The pelvic belt is easy to adjust, similar to a backpack. Paexo Shoulder transfers the arm weight directly to the hips, not via the back. Ball joint The ball joint at the hip enables full freedom of movement for the upper body. Arm shell The arm shell supports the weight of the arms. It is made of skin-friendly material already proven in medical technology.

The Paexo Shoulder has so far exceeded our expectations

“We have evaluated the Paexo Shoulder in our custom boat building production environment, and are thrilled that it significantly decreases muscle fatigue and improves workplace ergonomics, thus contributing to the overall health and safety of our Baltic Family members. The Paexo Shoulder has so far exceeded our expectations and we recommend it without reservation, especially for demanding work in overhead environments.”

Anders Kurtén, CEO Baltic Yachts

Immediately relieved strain on muscles…

“Our employees were delighted by the way it immediately relieved strain on their muscles, for example during overhead welding or electrical installations under ceilings. My impression is that exoskeletons also make jobs in industrial assembly more attractive. They can increase employeeloyalty and help us recruit new employees.”

Kersten Thor,CEO of THOR Industriemontagen GmbH & Co. KG

Paexo Shoulder is an exoskeleton from Ottobock that supports people who carry out physically demanding tasks with their arms raised on a daily basis. It relieves strain on the shoulder joints and upper arms, for example when performing overhead work in assembly or trades.

Ottobock researched the influence of overhead exoskeletons on the body’s biomechanics with experts from the very beginning during the development of Paexo Shoulder. Meanwhile two studies prove the effectiveness and document the highly positive results regarding relief for the entire body thanks to Paexo Shoulder:

Objective and Subjective Effects of a Passive Exoskeleton on Overhead Work

Principle study about the effect of an industrial exoskeleton on overhead work

Manual work above shoulder and head height puts a great deal of strain on the joints and muscles of the shoulders, arms and back. The neck muscles can also get very tense due to tilting the head back. Such activities can lead to work-related disorders of the musculoskeletal system over the long term.

About one quarter (23.2%) of days missed because of inability to work in Germany are due to musculoskeletal disorders (data from 2013). This figure increases with age: among people older than 55, it already accounts for more than 35%. Thus the economic cost of musculoskeletal disorders is considerable (loss of gross value added: approx. EUR 20 billion, 2013 data) (see DGUV). There is a proven, direct relationship between overhead work and musculoskeletal disorders. Physical relief provided by exoskeletons can contribute to reducing work-related health hazards, time away from work and accidents. An exoskeleton can therefore make a major contribution to preventive healthcare for employees.

No, you still have to perform all movements yourself. The Paexo Shoulder exoskeleton merely reduces load peaks by redistributing loads.

No, Paexo Shoulder provides relief and support for people. It improves ergonomics and can increase motivation, but it is not a performance-boosting exoskeleton.

The biomechanical design permits full freedom of movement. Thus you can sit down with the Paexo Shoulder or pick up fallen objects.

Yes, the level of support is individually adjustable for people and activities.

Paexo Shoulder can be adapted to body heights from about 160 to 190 cm.

We recommend personal assignment of the exoskeleton. Only then can the optimum effectiveness of Paexo Shoulder be guaranteed. Sharing it with another user is also not recommended for hygiene reasons. However, Paexo Shoulder can be easily retrofitted and sanitised in order to assign it to a new long-term user.

After a familiarisation phase, it takes only about 30 seconds to put on and take off.

The period of use for Paexo Shoulder is not limited. Since Paexo Shoulder is easy to put on and take off, it can easily be removed when not in use, for example when rotating workstations or during breaks.

With its weight of less than two kilograms, Paexo Shoulder is the lightest exoskeleton of its kind.

The prices for the Paexo exoskeletons vary.

We would be happy to make you an offer. Please contact us via contact form.

The Paexo Shoulder is made in Germany.

You can test the Paexo Shoulder by booking three different test packages for a period between 4 and 10 weeks. We support you from the introduction at the workplace to the organizational implementation and the evaluation of the results. If you would like an offer for one of the three test options, please contact us using our contact form.

If there is a functional limitation or injury in the shoulder/upper arm area, which is particularly important in the workplace or leads to a limitation in the execution of work, Paexo Shoulder can, under certain conditions, support or improve the range of movement of the person. The way to get a prescription and thus to have the costs for Paexo Shoulder covered by the health insurance company can be as follows:

The effectiveness and suitability in the specific case should first be evaluated by the attending physician or within the scope of rehabilitation therapy (written recommendation/final report) and can then be confirmed by the attending professional association physician in the form of positive expert opinion. After contacting your responsible professional association, a second opinion by a specialist doctor/orthopedist will probably be required. If the second opinion is positive and a prescription has been issued, you can then contact us directly so that we can clarify the assumption of costs via the Berufsgenossenschaft contact person based on the Berufsgenossenschaft damage number and original prescription and then send the system to you.
