New Exoskeleton Relieves the Back

Paexo Back was developed in collaboration with logistics experts and employees in warehousing and parcel distribution centres. The exoskeleton works according to a biomechanical principle: like with a backpack, the load is taken off at the shoulder, like a backpack, and transferred to the thighs with the help of the exoskeleton’s support structure. The energy store absorbs force when bending and releases it again when lifting.

Relief of up to 25 kilograms for the lower back.

The heart of the system is the purely mechanical control at hip level – a technological world first. It can differentiate between bending and walking and switches off automatically when walking to provide full freedom of movement. The degree of support can be continuously adjusted to the load of different work steps.

Exo Day
Can Paexo Shoulder be covered by health insurance/be prescribed by a doctor?2020-07-02T13:30:59+02:00

If there is a functional limitation or injury in the shoulder/upper arm area, which is particularly important in the workplace or leads to a limitation in the execution of work, Paexo Shoulder can, under certain conditions, support or improve the range of movement of the person. The way to get a prescription and thus to have the costs for Paexo Shoulder covered by the health insurance company can be as follows:

The effectiveness and suitability in the specific case should first be evaluated by the attending physician or within the scope of rehabilitation therapy (written recommendation/final report) and can then be confirmed by the attending professional association physician in the form of positive expert opinion. After contacting your responsible professional association, a second opinion by a specialist doctor/orthopedist will probably be required. If the second opinion is positive and a prescription has been issued, you can then contact us directly so that we can clarify the assumption of costs via the Berufsgenossenschaft contact person based on the Berufsgenossenschaft damage number and original prescription and then send the system to you.

How can you test the Paexo Shoulder?2020-05-11T13:33:59+02:00

You can test the Paexo Shoulder by booking three different test packages for a period between 4 and 10 weeks. We support you from the introduction at the workplace to the organizational implementation and the evaluation of the results. If you would like an offer for one of the three test options, please contact us using our contact form.

How are they developing the products further in terms of digital networking – what functions could exoskeletons have in ten years?2020-05-11T13:16:54+02:00

Networking and the use of anonymised data are of great importance, because they can earlier identify risks arising from physically strenuous work. These are areas in which we are already doing research, and they will not only find their way into our products in ten years time. The functions also have an additional benefit for the user himself/herself, it can help the user to move more economically, to protect himself/herself against injuries or simply as a practical working aid.

Why does a medical technology company produce exoskeletons for industry and not for rehabilitation?2020-05-11T13:15:34+02:00

Ottobock is a world market leader in the field of technical orthopaedics. Our exoskeletons for rehabilitation are already on the market, e.g. the C-Brace from orthotics. After all, exoskeletons are based on the functional principle of orthoses, a field in which Ottobock can already demonstrate more than 100 years of experience. Our Paexo products are increasingly focusing on prevention at a wide variety of workplaces.

When will exoskeletons be available for private use, for shopping, or for loading things from the car?2020-05-11T13:15:05+02:00

The commercialization of Paexo is a goal we have firmly in mind. The world of exoskeletons is new and exciting, and our extensive experience in industry, crafts and logistics will help us optimize the product for private use. We will be happy to keep you up to date on this.

Does the use of exoskeletons possibly result in job cuts because the work can be done more effectively?2020-05-11T13:14:35+02:00

The opposite is the case. On the one hand, we see in many sectors, including logistics or warehouses at industrial companies, that automation approaches are interesting and are being tried out, but also often reach their limits. We don’t know what will happen in ten years time, but the acute question of relieving employees through personal measures is already arising today. In this respect, these measures are a means of maintaining the employment of people who work in such logistics processes. We are observing that people who have fallen ill return to the labour market in good health, but may not be able to return to where they were originally employed. That is where we start with our Paexo exoskeletons and there is a very good potential for Paexo Back.

Does the user get superpowers?2020-05-11T13:13:59+02:00

No, the user does not get superpowers. The principle of Paexo products is to support the user and thereby relieve the user. The Paexo Back works in the area of the lower spine and produces a measurable positive relief effect when lifting heavy loads. When bending, energy is stored in the system and returned to the user as soon as the person straightens up again. The lower spinal column area is noticeably relieved up to 25 kg.

What are the disadvantages of the product and how does the diversion of forces affect the body?2020-05-11T13:13:28+02:00

Paexo products are developed according to biomechanical principles. Two important issues are the application and transfer of forces and the interfaces on the body. The principle of force redirection is crucial for all Paexo products. Please have a look at the Paexo Shoulder studies on our website to get an impression of our work.

Can Paexo Back also be used in other industries, for example in the care sector or at the airport for loading luggage?2020-05-11T13:12:37+02:00

In the care sector we are researching possible applications for Paexo Back. We are not yet using it in this area. Nurses are exposed to an enormous strain on the spine, which can lead to serious diseases and injuries in the back. This is what we are researching and we will be happy to keep you up to date with the developments on our channels. The airport is a classic application for the Paexo Back. Areas of application are baggage loading on the aircraft and processing in the airport.

What is an exoskeleton?2020-06-08T15:17:41+02:00

An exoskeleton is a supporting structure worn on the body that relieves strain on the musculoskeletal system during specific activities. A distinction is made between passive and active exoskeletons. A passive exoskeleton does not need an energy supply; its function is purely mechanical. An active exoskeleton is equipped with sensors and motors, which means that it provides more support but depends on an external energy supply.

For what abdominal circumference is the Paexo Soft Back suited?2020-05-11T13:41:03+02:00

Why is using the Paexo Soft Back important?2020-01-07T13:59:06+01:00

About one quarter (23.2%) of days missed because of inability to work in Germany are due to musculoskeletal disorders (data from 2013). And this figure increases with age: among people older than 55, it already accounts for more than 35%. In other words, the economic cost of musculoskeletal disorders is considerable (loss of gross value added: approx. EUR 20 billion, 2013 data) (see DGUV).

There is a proven, direct relationship between overhead work and musculoskeletal disorders. Physical relief provided by exoskeletons can contribute to reducing work-related health hazards, time away from work and accidents. Exoskeletons can therefore make a major contribution to preventive healthcare for employees.

What consequences does work above head and shoulder height have for the human body?2020-04-03T11:51:20+02:00

Manual work above shoulder and head height puts a great deal of strain on the joints and muscles of the shoulders, arms and back. The neck muscles can also get very tense due to tilting the head back. Such activities can lead to work-related disorders of the musculoskeletal system over the long term.

Is the effect of Paexo Shoulder scientifically proven?2020-06-08T16:32:09+02:00

Ottobock researched the influence of overhead exoskeletons on the body’s biomechanics with experts from the very beginning during the development of Paexo Shoulder. Meanwhile two studies prove the effectiveness and document the highly positive results regarding relief for the entire body thanks to Paexo Shoulder:

Objective and Subjective Effects of a Passive Exoskeleton on Overhead Work
